Writing has changed. What used to be a solitary endeavor is now collaborative. From colleagues working real-time within the same office to contractors on the other side of the world commenting on your next big idea. Whatever the workflow this is now an expected part of the content creation experience.
The ability to add comments to a document is a feature many of us became familiar with through our use of Microsoft Word, Google Docs or Apple Pages. When users become familiar with the functionality in apps like this, they expect to see it in every (similar) app. Including yours.
We’re excited to announce the first release of Tiny Comments, the first step in our vision to bring commenting to TinyMCE. With Tiny Comments, you can now add commenting and threaded conversations to your project.
Tiny Comments behaves in a familiar way for word processor users. Simply highlight the content you want to add a comment to and type in your thoughts. The launch version includes the ability for comments to be deleted and we plan to add editable comments soon. You can also toggle between showing and hiding all comments and replies.
In future releases, you’ll see more features added to Tiny Comments, including editing comments and replies, the ability to mention other users in your network, displaying reaction emoticons (like/dislike/heart) for each comment, and inserting various styles of emojis.
For developers: how to add commenting to TinyMCE
Once you’ve played with the Codepen. you’ll find detailed implementation information in the Tiny Comments developer documentation.
In this 1.0 release, you build your own storage solution for creating, storing comments and looking up comments. We have created an example showing how to do just that.
In upcoming releases, we’ll introduce new storage capabilities, including the ability to store comments entirely within the content. We’re aiming to enable you to store your comments in Tiny Cloud.
Tiny Comments has a minimum requirement of TinyMCE 4.8.2. If you are a cloud user on our ‘stable’ channel, your editor is already up-to-date. If you are a self-hosted user, you can get the latest version from “Self-hosted Releases” on our download pages.
How to get Tiny Comments
Tiny Comments is a premium plugin available today from our online store. It can be purchased as a one-off, standalone plugin, as an inclusion in the Tiny Pro bundle, or as part of a custom priced solution (which is most often chosen by OEM/ISV/SaaS businesses).
Existing Tiny Pro subscribers, your plan just got better. Tiny Comments is now included at no additional charge. If you’re using Tiny Cloud, it has already been added to your API key. If you’re an existing self-hosted user, you need to get the latest download package.
